I am John D. Boro, the 3rd youngest son born in a Hindu family. We had a nuclear family, including 4 brothers, father, and mother.
We belong to the Boro tribe, and there was a revolutionary movement for the Boro land (separate state) in Assam, India, so my family was the chosen one for the movement.
At the age of 14, I joined the army in the year 1997; we had to carry armament and fight against national armies and territorial guards; we were entitled as "Alfa" or terrorists by the Indian Government during the period.
We hid in the forest and also looted some villages in 2000 due to a lack of food supplies.
One night, we, as five members, went into a village to loot and feast, but then we saw people praying and worshipping, and the man (maybe a pastor or evangelist) gave us a gospel track. After eating dinner, we left the house and moved towards the camp
On the next day, I woke up and read the tracks. The tracks told about the creation of the world, how sin entered into this world, etc.
But the biblical verse that really woke me up is from Mark 8:36, which states, "(LEB): For what does it benefit a person to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?"
That single verse questioned my fight, its worth and my existence. For days, the verse repeated in my mind, and the questions made me crazy.
So I visited the same house and met the person (who gave me track) and questioned him about the meanings of the verse, and he explained to me.
Although I wanted to follow Christ and live a simple life as God intended, the two forces made it harder.
The " National Democratic Front of Bodoland" (NDFB) had made it clear to kill me if I surrendered myself to the government.
But, as days passed, the local Christian members supported me as a brother. Internally, they made me surrender to the government, and I did as they suggested
I continued my fellowship in the village with those Christians, but as soon as the national telenews channel reviewed our surrender information, my family summoned me to the home (Assam), and they scolded and thrashed me for my acts.
Then, on December 18, 2001, my family member again summoned me to the home village for an official meeting. The meeting was about my faith (Christianity), and the meeting ended with a list of agreements like -
1) I am dead to the family, society and community
2) I shall have no right to property
3) I am not invited into the family, but I am charged a fine of ₹501 for every visit and stay.
They burnt and buried my belongings and did my last ride in the village, and I was exiled from my home and my village. My eldest brother, out of sympathy, gave me ₹500, so I went to the nearest railway station with limited clothing.
Due to the extreme winter, I was shivering alone. I had no other option but to leave my life in God's hands, and I prayed alone.
The night passed by, and the next day, on December 19, I prayed to God to show me the way as I had already been dead to my family members and my loved ones. I have no other option but to stay rather than move forward in life. Still, I hadn't received any help.
On December 20, I was weak and mentally depressed; suicidal thoughts had overcome my existence, and I was ready to die on a railway track, but then a stranger arrived; he was Hindu by religion.
The Great Commission
He had come to pick up his son, and he sheltered me and gave me food to eat; I was a servant and a labourer for him, but my mission was to live and to fulfil the great commission of our Lord. So I left that home and wandered from place to place, sharing the Gospel and testimonies.
I had an awesome opportunity to join Bible College in Assam in 2002 and was baptised there. I graduated in 2004 with great opportunities. I further studied in Haryana for a Bachelor's degree in Theology, graduating in 2008.
With God's love and grace, I was guided to New Delhi for a ministry with children. In 2010, Lord introduced me to a beautiful wife and a supportive life partner and gifted me with our beautiful kids.
With God's love and mercy, I am still involved in great ministries in the Dooars region of West Bengal, among our talented and young youths and children.
John D Boro: India
John D Boro's Christian Testimony
Why is it so difficult for our educators and society, in general, to understand that love and respect for one another taught from a young age can solve much of the world's hostility and social problems!
"Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it" (Prov 22:6).
Love is the answer!
True loyalty springs from the heart and is wrapped in love. It is often in our most private moments that true loyalty, or the lack of it, is made known.
